Antispam Appliance Overview (Details)

PowerElf Anti-Spam Filter / Anti-UBE (Unsolicited Bulk Email Filter)

The PowerElf antispam server appliance easily stops viruses and spam in their tracks. Setup is done through an easy-to-use GUI interface.

Unsolicited mail messages not only slows down productivity on the server, it also wastes end-users time by forcing them to sort messages in order to find relevant emails. The PowerElf can be used as a standalone mail server or as a proxy mail server.

The PowerElf uses several different techniques to help stop spam at its entry point, long before it has a chance to travel to the end-user's mailbox.

  1. The mail server receives the mail and puts it through the optional antivirus scanner to ensure that the mail passing through does not contain a virus.
  2. If antivirus is installed, and 2-stage mail filtering is enabled, the virus scanner will check incoming mail against a conservative online DNSRBL list. Well known spam servers are stopped at connection. This feature prevents your server from having to process very well-known spam e-mail.
  3. Now, mail passes through the attachment filter to scan for undesirable executable attachments. The administrator can configure and enable this feature for all types of attachments, including non-executable content, such as mp3, jpg, gif, and mpg.
  4. The mail message is received by the antispam engine. The engine uses it's heuristics to scan the content of the message. It can also perform a DNSRBL and bulk-mail check before assigning a "spam-rating" number to the e-mail.
  5. The spam rating number is determined by a rule set that calculates the likelihood that a piece of mail is legitimate or spam. The "tagging" level and "auto-delete" level are controlled and set by the administrator.
  6. If the "auto-delete" is enabled and the threshold is set, the server will determine whether to delete the spam or let it pass though.
  7. Tagged (suspected spam) and non-spam e-mail will be delivered to the recipient. Mail that is suspected to be spam will be marked accordingly.
